aWith the weekend's biggest prize on the line Saturday night at El Paso Speedway Park (El Paso, Texas), Rodney Sanders found himself in Victory Lane with a $4,000 paycheck at the 2nd Annual Icebreaker. (Donald Iverson Photo)

Twenty-eight Open Wheel Modified warriors registered for the event, which was sanctioned by the United States Modified Touring Series (USMTS). In preliminary action, Sanders raced to a second place finish in his heat race to lock into the redraw for the 50-lap finale.

Sanders drew the eighth starting spot for the main event, and quickly advanced four positions to the fourth spot at the drop of the green flag. On lap 24, Sanders snuck by Terry Phillips for third and then Dereck Ramirez four laps later to move into second.

Rodney caught race-long pacesetter, Austin Arneson on lap 30 and then scooted past on the inside as they crossed the line to complete the 32nd lap. Sanders never got far from Arneson, but never relinquished the lead again as he roared to his first USMTS victory of the season.

“The track was real good tonight,” Sanders added. “It was slick and smooth and it was a real good night for us. It feels good to get a win here.”

Arneson settled into the runner-up spot while Zack Vanderbeek, Jake Gallardo, and Ramirez completed the top five finishers.

February 27th, 2015 - Sanders Competes with USMTS at El Paso Speedway Park
aRodney Sanders returned to the Open Wheel Modified ranks over the weekend, competing with the United States Modified Touring Series (USMTS) in the 2nd Annual Icebreaker at El Paso Speedway Park (El Paso, Texas).

Thirty Open Wheel Modifieds were on hand Thursday night for the $2,000-to-win opener. Sanders fell to a sixth place after starting fourth, leaving him just short of a transfer position and sending him to a b-main. He went on to finish second in the b-main to lock into the eighteenth starting spot on the feature grid. Rodney was up to twelfth in the running order before mechanical issues brought his night to an early end, resulting in a disappointing 21st place finish.

Friday night's $3,000-to-win program saw twenty-eight entries returning for battle. A heat race victory sent Rodney to the redraw for the 40-lap finale where he was the recipient of the second starting spot, alongside side Fito Gallardo on the front row. Sanders gained control when the green flag waved, stretching out to a six-car-length lead in the first five laps. But Gallardo reeled in Sanders and pulled alongside as they completed lap 12.

Dereck Ramirez joined the war the next time around and a three-car battle ensued for the next seven laps. With two lapped cars in their path, the trio split the back-markers and nearly went five-wide before Sanders settled back into the top spot with Ramirez and Gallardo hot on his heels.

Racing down the back-stretch on lap 15, Sanders slipped too high over the embankment which allowed Ramirez to rocket past on the inside. Sanders remained at bay until the races only caution waved on lap nineteen. On the restart, the lead group resumed their battle but seventeenth starting, Austin Arneson was on the move.

Arneson got around Sanders with six laps to go, passed Gallardo with three to go before taking the lead from Ramirez at the flagstand with just two circuits remaining. Sanders ultimately crossed the finish line in third behind Arenson and Ramirez, while Gallardo and Jesse Sobbing rounded out the top five finishers.

February 19th, 2015 - Sanders Speedweeks Campaign Ends Early
aA nightmare 2015 Georgia/Florida Speedweeks for Rodney Sanders likely came to an end on Thursday night after rolling his machine while battling for position in a b-main.

Forty-nine entries converged on Volusia Speedway Park (Barberville, Florida) on Thursday as the World of Outlaws (WoO) Late Models Series headlined a $10,000-to-win program. After failing to reach a transfer position in heat race action, Sanders found himself pinned deep in the first b-main. While battling for position through turns one and two he bounced off the side of another competitor and slid up the track. From there, Sanders slapped the outside guardrail and then his car dug into the track, flipping once before coming to rest. Sanders climbed from the car without injury however, his machine ended up towed off the 1/2-mile oval dangling between two wreckers.

During the course of the main event, Sanders moved forward to a fourth place finish in the final rundown behind race winner, Shane Clanton, Darrell Lanigan and Tim McCreadie. Casey Roberts completed the top five finishers.

February 7th, 2015 - Sanders Enters Winter Freeze at Screven Motor Speedway
aRodney Sanders returned to the Super Late Model ranks on Thursday evening at Screven Motor Speedway (Sylvania, Georgia) during the opening round of the 5th Annual Winter Freeze.

The unsanctioned, $5,000-to-win program saw a field of thirty-four entries register for battle. Sanders fell short of locking into the main event via time trials, sending him to a b-main. He went on to a fifth place finish in his b-main to lock into the nineteenth starting spot for the finale. Rodney battled for position early on before retiring to a 24th place finish. Complete results from the event can be found at www.ScrevenMotorsports.com.

After a nightmare outing the previous night, Sanders hoped to improve on his performance in Saturday night's $10,000-to-win finale.
