Rodney Sanders
Second-place finish in Spring Challenge at Deer Creek
After Mother Nature shifted Thursday’s opener to Monday, Rodney Sanders kicked off his Memorial Day weekend on Friday evening at Chateau Speedway (Lansing, Minn.) with the United States Modified Touring Series (USMTS).
Drawing 42 entries, Sanders topped his qualifying group before placing second in his heat race. Receiving the eighth-starting position for the A-Main, Rodney raced to the front and had the field covered when a broken gear with four laps remaining ended his night immediately. He was credited with a 16th-place outing.
On Saturday evening at Deer Creek Speedway (Spring Valley, Minn.), Rodney followed up a heat race win with a second-place finish in the feature. He followed Dereck Ramirez across the line with Dustin Sorensen rounding out the podium.
The following night at Winneshiek Raceway (Decorah, Iowa) for the 15th annual Nordic Nationals, Sanders came in seventh in his heat before placing sixth in his B-Main. Taking a provisional into the $10,000-to-win A-Main, Sanders rebounded to finish 15th after suffering a flat tire near the middle stages of the 40-lapper.
For the $5,000-to-win finale on Monday at Mason City Motor Speedway (Mason City, Iowa), Rodney edged his way into the feature with a third-place finish in his heat. Clawing forward one spot in the 40-lap affair, Sanders posted a sixth-place finish.
Rodney is currently fifth in the latest USMTS point standings.
